About

Curbside Cycle began - not surprisingly – by the side of the curb, about fifteen years ago. Back then we were just a semi-legal tent, a variety of ever-changing locations, and a pretty clear idea about what was missing in the market. Our focus, from the beginning on, was that neglected cyclist, the bicycle commuter. At the time we were one of many ragtag operations across North America turning old road bikes into flat bar bikes, a trend the bicycle industry later turned into a bike called the hybrid. Around the same time the hybrid was developed we finally acquired storefront in the much desired Annex neighbourhood of Toronto. Sure, we moved a couple feet away from the curb, but we always remained Curbside, a store dedicated to that strip of road beside the curb that the cycle commuter occupies.

Today, Curbside is as close to that curb as ever, perhaps the closest it has ever been. Sure, we (like others) may have had something to do with the invention of the hybrid bike, but we knew things could be pushed even further. After all, how many more people could be put onto bikes, and how? So, we started bringing in English and Danish commuter bikes, bikes that were low maintenance, weather proof and clothing friendly (finally!). We started bringing in folding bikes, bikes that could be stored at home or at work and were great for mid-afternoon errands. And, then we brought in the holy grail of bicycles, the bike that represented the archetype and apex of commuter bicycle design, the dutch brand Batavus. We can’t tell you what we are doing next?

Today Curbside is having a whole lot of fun. We carry fun commuter bikes, fun recreational bikes, and even some fun performance bikes. We’re all about bikes for everyone. But we just aren't about bikes either. We have always had an eye for good design, from our Biomega shaft drive bikes to our Moulton folding bikes. We think the best kind of commuter bike crosses over into all aspects of ones life, just like a good bag, or a good bottle, so we started carrying exclusive lines like SIGG, Chrome and Freitag, stuff that you can’t find anywhere else, just like a lot of bikes we carry!

And then we realized: we are doing something no one else is doing. Perhaps that is why we found ourselves shipping bikes and other fun stuff all over the country – there’s lots of fun people out there! So, we sat down and developed this little e-commerce site, our way of giving all you progressive folks an opportunity to buy progressive products in a country full of, well, non-progessive urban-living stores. But hey, we keep our ear to the ground, or rather, to the side of the curb. And, when all those curbsides across Canada become bike lanes – like the Netherlands – we will call it mission accomplished. Happy shopping!
